The short answer
A partnership, not a person.
Everything 4D LLC is a consulting partnership founded in May 2025 by Kirk Brooks, J. Douglas Cryer, and Angel I. Vazquez. We design, build, modernize, and maintain business applications on 4D — the database platform that runs everything from two-person shops to one of the largest single installations in the world, a multibillion-dollar company whose entire operation runs on it.
We are a 4D Silver Partner. We work from San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Bedford, England, serving clients across the United States and the United Kingdom, remotely or on site.
What makes us different is not the technology. It's the structure. Each of us could work alone — two of us did, for decades. We chose not to.
1986Year our earliest partner started building software
1988Our first 4D database — on a Macintosh, for an art gallery
26+Years our longest-standing client relationship has run

Why we exist
The problem we built the company to solve.
4D has always attracted independent developers. The toolbox let one person build useful, sometimes sophisticated, bespoke systems at prices a small business could afford — and because a well-written 4D application is robust, those systems tend to run for a very long time. Many are still in daily use twenty or thirty years after they were written.
That longevity is a strength, right up until the developer is gone. We have taken calls from business owners whose long-time developer had retired or died, taking the source code with them. In one case the owner didn't know her application carried a hard-coded expiration date until the server refused to start. We recovered most of her data; nothing could recover the working system she depended on.
A business-critical system should not have a single point of failure — and that includes the people who maintain it.
So we built the firm around that principle. Our partners span two generations. Every engagement is known to more than one of us. We document as we go, keep code in version control the client can access, and plan the hand-off from the first day — because a hand-off is eventually certain, and the only question is whether it's orderly.
The 4D community knows us: through decades of client work in the US and UK, through the 4D Partner Network, and through the weekly 4D Happy Hour that Kirk hosted from 2020 to 2026, where developers, project managers, and executives whose businesses rely on 4D gathered to solve real problems in the open.
